Confessions of a Mommy RD

picky-eater

So when people (who clearly don’t know me very well), find out I am a Registered Dietitian.. certain, let’s say, assumptions are made. These are some of these said assumptions or questions I get asked when I reveal, I have 4 kids AND I’m a Dietitian.

– WOW, your kids MUST be the HEALTHIEST eaters, right?! (They do eat pretty healthy, but we aren’t going to be winning any awards or anything).

– YOU are baking cupcakes for their birthday party???? I didn’t know you ate cupcakes! (This is a person who CLEARLY does not know me).

– Sucks to be one of your kids/husband huh? (Yea, it bites to be them. I force feed brussel sprouts and lima beans at most meals).

– Well obviously, you will bring the fruit or veggie side dish to the classroom party. (Obviously. Because I can’t make anything else.)

– Bet your kids never get cookies or chips huh? (Nope. Never.)

So let’s dispell some of these myths shall we?

I do try and feed (myself) and my family healthy. To an extent. I have ALWAYS been and will continue to be an everything in moderation dietitian. I love food. Both healthy and not. And I try to moderate the less than healthy stuff. Why? Because four sugared up kids are NO FUN to be around. Nor in being trapped in an hour car ride with those 4 children after eating a fast food meal. (You know what I’m talkin’ bout!).

Here are some confessions of this mom RD.

  1. My kids eat hotdogs (I know, the HORROR right!?). I try for 100% kosher, all beef ones, or the occasional turkey hotdog with no nitrates. But let’s face it. You can heat a hotdog in 30 seconds. Boom.
  2. My kids have a dessert or treat daily. It may be a cookie or pudding in their lunch.. but you gotta live, ya know? And I would have revolted against my mom had she withheld the cookies from MY school lunch.
  3. I don’t buy all organic. I do try and buy certain items organic, range free, or antibiotic free. But certainly not all of them. At the end of the day, an apple is still an apple and I’d rather mt kids eat a regular ol apple or fruit cup than fill up on junk food.
  4. My kids don’t eat all 100% home cooked, whole foods. Sometimes it’s a dinner thrown together. Mind you, I try and make it healthier by making sure the fat or salt content is low, switching out a processed carb for a whole grain one, or by adding a fruit or veggie side.

The point is, I am a busy (BUSY) mom of 4, who works ALL OF THE TIME and juggles MANY hats. I do not pretend to be perfect or know all the answers. I do try and feed my kids the healthiest foods I can. Sometimes weeks are great. Some weeks are not. But that’s life right? It’s all about moderation people!

So next time you see me bring a dessert to a party…let’s keep the comments to yourself shall we? 😉
